CBD Oil and Sleep
Most of us would do just about anything for a good night's sleep. Common causes of insomnia are:
- mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression
- medications
- chronic pain
- restless leg syndrome
- caffeine
- environmental factors, such as loud noises or an uncomfortable bed
Many of us have no choice but to turn to prescription drugs which have their own unfortunate side effects. If you've tried everything else to cure your sleep issues including meditation, regular exercise, proper sleep hygiene, and melatonin, it can feel hopeless.
If you've been searching for a more natural option this may be just the thing for you.
Cannabis has been used medicinally for centuries, as a sleep aid, a pain and nausea reducer, to relieve anxiety and to support other mood problems.
Two of the cannabinoids that are most widely recognized for their medicinal value are THC and CBD. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is a chemical compound that delivers a “high” that occurs from ingesting marijuana. CBD does not produce the same "high", but can have positive physical and mental affects.
Studies suggest that CBD (cannabidiol) is so good at treating sleep issues because it may help with both falling asleep and staying asleep. As well as this, a study from the European Journal of Pain showed CBD applied on the skin could help lower pain and inflammation from arthritis. Another study demonstrated that CBD inhibits inflammatory and neuropathic pain, two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat.
How to use CBD for sleep support
Everyone is going to be different. What works for one person may not work for another. Several factors will help you determine your ideal amount including the type of sleep issues and body weight.
The recommended starting internal dosage is 25 mg. Remember to be patient and slowly adjust if needed, as this is not an overnight cure. CBD tinctures and oils can be found in legal stores across Canada, and can be purchased safely from government stores, such as BC Cannabis Stores. Options to support sleep can be found in edible, oil, tinctures, and other forms.
As always talk to your doctor before trying something like CBD, especially if you are currently taking any other medications that may be affected as a result.
